8 Reviews of the Salerno 400
By: Chrisj100 Reason: I own(ed) one Made in: 2008 Rating:
Spacious bedroom (easily sleeps 2 adults and 2 children) with plenty of room to stand up. Living area is not quite so spacious and not really suitable for four people (even if two of them are young children) although this isn't really an issue if the weather's good as you can open up the front and spill over into the open air. The zips leaked in heavy rain and we found the tent to be colder at night than previous tents we've owned (probably due to the good ventilation in the bedroom). Quite easy to pitch / take down if there's two of you but can be a bit tricky on your own in poor weather. All in all - great value for money and would be spacious enough for two adults, but if you want something with a comfortable living area you may want to consider spending a bit more.

We bought this tent to replace our bigger one (down sizing now the kids have gone) and it is perfect for two. With a double airbed in the bedroom you still have plenty of room to get dressed and move around. The front section has room for a couple of chairs and a small table so you can sit in if you want/need to and the inclusive ground sheet is great.
We have only used it for one night in good weather and don't think it will be as good in heavy rain as the groundsheet in the front section is not built in and could let rain in but the bedroom would be fine.
Our main reason for choosing this tent was the head room, my husband is over 6 feet tall and this was a comfortable height for him.

We've had the Salerno 400 for a couple of years and have been away in it around 20 times. The longest trips have been 3 week tours of France, Switzerland and Germany.
We initially bought the tent for camping by car although, we find that the packed size can be accommodated on a motorcycle with a little thought and a few straps.
2010 saw some pretty fierce thunder storms across Europe, but this tent just shrugged off the worst of it. The seams are all watertight and we've had no leaks, even in the heaviest rain.
My girlfriend and I can easily have the tent pitched in 10 minutes. There's plenty of space for two adults and a child. The headroom is good, I'm 6'2 and can stand up in the tent. So no more horizontal dressing, thank god. Also, a small bonus is that with the tent inner removed essential bike maintenance can comfortably be done without rain running down your neck.
I'm not saying that this tent is one to take on a trip up Mt. Kanchenchunga but for Spring and Summer in Northern Europe it's hard to beat for the price.
For me, if a thing doesn't perform the task that it's designed for I bin it. With that in mind, I've just bought another Salerno 400 for half the price I paid for my current tent back in 2008.

This tent was listed as a four man when purchased last year, alas I am very disappointed in it, to say the least.
I found that my wife and I had just enough room to sleep the 2 of us and store our gear. Although at 6' 2, I was able to stand up in the sleeping area
We found the porched living area was woefully small and cramped when we had to spend extended periods in the tent during inclement weather.
We also found that the porched area was extremely prone to water ingress, partly due to the fact that several seams sprung leaks but mainly due to the fact that the ground sheet is not of the sewn in variety, with the result that all too frequently rainwater was blown in under the fly sheet.
The fact that this tent is also bereft of 'windows'( a fact I overlooked at time of purchase) added to the feeling of being hemmed in while spending any length of time in the tent
Thankfully though the sleeping area did not suffer from the same water ingress fault as this doe's benefit from a sewn in groundsheet
I feel that this particular tent is a fine weather only model and not really suited to camping conditions often found here in the uk with regard to changeable weather conditions.
As a result I will be replacing this tent asap and can not in all honesty recommend it to any-one based on my own personal experience of having owned and used one

Im really pleased with our tent, having paid just £35 from gooutdoors it was excellent value. It slept 5 on a night we had a mishap with our pup tent, a bit of a squeeze but its nice to find a 4 berth which genuinely can sleep 4 in comfort, never mind 5 in an emergency!
Same as 'muckywellies' we found the side door zip/seam ( didnt fathom which)leaked in a heavy downpour and the porch groundsheet was slightly too large for the porch but this doesnt put me off what is otherwise a fab tent. It was also first outing so maybe it was weathering in.
Our advertised HH is 2000 too so maybe its been improved?
Id say this is a fab fent for a family for weekends or festival going, not the lightest but manageable, easy to pitch and great quality

Bargain at £40. One bedroom that slept 2 adults and 2 under 5s comfortably. Heavy rain and moderate winds were no problem, though it did buckle once briefly in one corner when the wind picked up. Some slight leaking from the zip in the side door during the worst of the rain, but no problem given how heavy the rain was. Bedroom stayed bone dry and was surprisingly cool when the weather picked up and the sun was very strong.
Poles were a bit fiddly to get back out when taking it down but not a big problem and a total doddle to put up. I could easily have done it on my own. (I'm only 5'3.)
Totally fine for our family of 4 - looking forward to more trips in it.

We bought this tent for the 2 of us and it first got an airing last year in the Lake District.
There's plenty of room for a double airbed and bags etc inside the bedroom, and enough room for me to stand up straight around the middle of the tent (I'm 5'11). The porch area is substantial and great for storing tables and chairs etc. It's also very easy for one person to erect, and with 2 it's a doddle. Ventilation in the tent is great and it's never let a single drop of water in.
On a 5 night trip to Cornwall last week (turned into a 3 night trip) we did find it's weakness. The marketing patter says 'Great for weekend breaks and summer getaways.'. It is just as long as it isn't too windy. We were on an expose campsite and were hit by some pretty strong winds. The tent was flattened. The poles are much thinner than those on touring tents and it really showed.
We have been really happy with this tent, and it is fine in most weather, but not in strong winds. Can't expect too much for a bargain £49 though, and I would certainly recommend it for fair weather trips.
